How did Samy and Cedric experience our CTG test class?
Samy and Cedric are two CTG colleagues who participated in our test class of April/May. They are eager to share their experience about this 4-weeks test training with you!
CTG test class
Before we listen to their story, let’s quickly tell you what this 'CTG test class' is all about. The aim of our junior test engineer training program is for students to acquire all testing skills needed to perform as a test professional in any test project. The program contains expert views on plan and value driven software testing approaches and provides content like defining test strategies, test design, test execution and defect management. The training program concludes with an internship in which trainees need to handle all aspects of a test project, going from defining and presenting a test plan over designing and executing tests to presenting test results in a test closure meeting. Next to applying the knowledge acquired during the training program, soft skills like effective communication, diplomacy, critical thinking, assertiveness, are also put into practice during this internship. After graduation, these new colleagues are ready for their first assignment.
The story of Samy and Cedric
Samy’s journey as a tester at CTG started on 19 April 2022, a day that was organized to welcome all new starters and introduce them to the company culture, our policies,... “We received a nice suitcase with some CTG goodies and of course, our new car! Our competence developer invited us for lunch and we had the chance to learn more about CTG, the company’s structure and also about the upcoming training.” Cedric missed the introductory day. “My first day was a little different than that of my colleagues. As I was still on vacation on the day that the introduction day was organized, I arrived at the CTG office the day that the training started. I was a bit worried that I might have missed some important explanations, but thanks to the HR team who guided and explained me, I was ready for my first day of training.”
And so the training actually took off. Samy explains: “No time to rest, serious things begin! The first training was about ‘Plan Driven Testing’, a syllabus that weighed about 1 kg! During this module, I learned a lot about what testing is. I was worried at first that the training was too theoretical, but that was not the case at all! I received another syllabus with plenty of exercises where you I could ‘test’ myself and ‘play around’ with the test techniques I had learned previously. Thanks to Nele, my coach, I managed to understand the different concepts about waterfall, the V-model, all the test techniques, the Plan Driven Testing core beliefs and principles and risk management.”
Cedric was not familiar with testing either: “With none or few existing knowledge about testing, the training started and it felt like college all over again. With a fully equipped classroom and a very enthusiastic trainer! I knew this was going to be very educational and interesting.”
And Samy continues: “After five intensive days of training on Plan Driven Testing, it was time to switch and start a new module… Value Driven Testing, given by Maxime! I did not know what to expect actually. I had heard a lot about Agile & SCRUM without knowing what it was, so I was really interested and curious. It is completely different from Plan Driven Testing, I would say more abstract and less straightforward. What I liked most about this module was the cooperation and the variety of the exercises. Sometimes I was exercising on my own, sometimes in a group or even together with Maxime. I really enjoyed it, because you had a better idea of how is it to work as a team using SCRUM and what to expect working in ‘real life’ at a client. My next goal will definitely be to become the best SCRUM Master!”
The end is near: time for an exam!
Samy explains: “After two weeks of training, time has come: the day of the exam! As required by CTG, the new tester has to meet CTG’s expectations. Meaning that you have to pass an exam about the two modules you have previously seen. Of course, this day was stressful, but actually, you soon find out that you have been really well-trained and prepared by your coaches and CTG also gives you a day off to study, so no worries!”
One final training, followed by an internship
“Knowledge is power”, says Cedric. “We had to do one more module, Context Driven Testing. This was the smallest module of the three, but certainly not less important and the perfect stepping-stone towards our internship. Here we had to test a concrete application from within CTG. We had to start from scratch and apply all of the above-learned theory. It was a 4-day internship with a presentation on the final day.” Samy continues: “The internship gave me the opportunity to test a website, together with my classmates. To me, this was the ‘cherry on the cake’, because I used all of my testing knowledge in a real project and I could see and understand the importance of the training.”
Conclusion
Both Samy and Cedric are enthusiastic about the training. Samy: “I really liked the test class experience. These days, most companies don’t take time to train their employees, but CTG really understood that it is important to make sure the juniors are ready to do a good job at the client. That is also why I think CTG is a great place to work. Everything is set up for you to feel comfortable and confident about your future (Competence Developer, Training, HR, etc.). I would also like to take my hat off to the coaches Nele, Maxime and Stefan. I could not have made it without their help and their patience.” And a final note from Cedric: “I really enjoyed the training path you have to follow when joining CTG as a tester. It really helps you to be a trained and complete tester in a very short time. I am ready for my first project! Being a CTG’er comes with a lot of benefits, including the company car of course, but also the coach you are assigned to. They really put a lot of effort in your well-being and personal growth. Overall, I want to say that my choice for a career at CTG was one of the best choices I have made!”
